BitTorrent is an American company that has developed the peer-to-peer protocol also known as “BitTorrent.” It has also developed two other clients for this protocol and they are called uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline. BitTorrent is not only a company and a protocol but it is also a software. When one says “BitTorrent,” the word is more inclined to file transfer using the protocol.
Just what is BitTorrent?
It is an easy, quick and efficient way to transfer files from one computer to another. Instead of downloading a particular file from a particular site, the file is downloaded section by section from various sources that are called seeders. You can make or share a file by using BitTorrent.
You do this my converting the file into a torrent. Peers or downloaders will find your open torrent and then start downloading blocks or pieces of a file. The file downloads to other peers’ computers and these peers share the pieces they downloaded to others who are also attempting to download the same file. The beauty of the system is that sharing of the files makes for an easier and faster download as more and more pieces are sourced from varied seeders.
Free And Legal
BitTorrent per se is not illegal as it is only a means of distributing content. However once you start receiving pieces of files, if copyright infringement is evident, then it’s illegal.
