Bit torrent or torrent is one type of meta-data that makes peer-to-peer file sharing easy. It is a free and no-fuzz way to trade and share all types of media files such as music, movies, TV shows, digital books and even software online.
Ask any internet savvy person and it is likely that he is “guilty” of using torrent – guilty in a sense since the usage of torrent borders on illegal trading of files. However, it is also a fact that not all torrent sharing is illegal.
How does it work?
In a nutshell, granting that you have a Torrent program already downloaded, you download the ”torrent” file of the movie or music file that you want and then open the file in the Bit Torrent client. Then the program sourced from other Bit Torrent clients who have the same media file then begins to download different parts of that file to complete the copy.
When the downloading is done, your file will read as an .avi or .mpg or.mov. Now what you do with the file is up to you. You can store it in your hard drive or burn it to a DVD or CD.
How do you download torrent files?
Step 1 - Search for a torrent program that best suit your requirements. You can choose from among the most popular clients such as uTorrent, BitLord, Azureus, BitTorrent, Deluge, Opera, Vuze and more.
Step 2 - After the download, you will be prompt on how to install the torrent program or your preferred client. Follow the instructions.
Step 3 - After the installation, go to a torrent site and browse for the file (movie, music, book) that you want downloaded. The most popular torrent sites are: Torrentz.eu; The Pirate Bay; IsoHunt; KickassTorrents; LimeTorrents; TorrentReactor and BTJunkie to name a few.
Step 4 - After choosing your preferred torrent, browse the program for the file that you want to download and then click the torrent link under that name. The download manager of the web browser will ask you what you want to do with the file. Using the torrent program, open the file. Usually, the torrent site will present you with the following:
- the name of the torrent you are about to download
- what kind of file it is – movie, music, application or game
- the size of the completed file
- the number of seeders (uploaders) who are available, as the number of people who “seed” parts of the file
- the number of leechers who are downloading the file
- the health status of the file as in the greener the indicator, the better it is
It is best to look for torrent files with plenty of seeders for fast downloads.
Step 5 - If the file does not open, save the torrent file in a designated location that you chose. Click open your torrent client and use the “Open Torrent” option to open the media file. It is best to set your web browser’s option to download to a specified folder so that when you use the options in your torrent client, it will automatically download to the specific folder.
Step 6 - Once opened, the download will automatically start. Downloading the media file could take a while. You can just minimize the program while you attend to other things.
Once you have downloaded the file, keep the torrent program running in the background so you can do your part in sharing the file to other leechers.
Note to keep your anti-virus program current before downloading torrents. There are plenty of free ant-virus program that you can source online.
